Tinkering with what’s succeeded in the past is always a risky endeavor for filmmakers, especially those who tackle sequels. For example, the first trailer for Star Trek Beyondmarked a departure point for the series, leaving behind J.J. Abrams’ classic, epic style in favor of a new approach by director Justin Lin, who helmed four films in the Fast and Furiousfranchise.
Oddly enough, though, some fans who were disappointed by the previous installment, Star Trek Into Darkness, and advocated for something totally different suddenly started complaining that the first trailer was too different. Perhaps they didn’t like the jokes or the music or the zippy tone or just the idea that Justin Lin might be making a version of Fast and Furious in space.
Over the weekend, Paramount Pictures hosted an event for fans in Los Angeles, with Lin and members of the cast in attendance. A new trailer debuted and it’s already received far more acclaim than the first one. Those of us who enjoyed the first trailer will find more reasons to enjoy what Lin and cowriters Simon Pegg and Doug Jung have cooked up.
The new trailer reflects a very serious tone as the U.S.S. Enterprise crew must abandon ship when they come under attack by a mysterious new enemy. (We get to hear one new humorous bit of business at the end, though.) It appears that some crew members will need to be rescued and that rescue will somehow include a motorcycle! Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, John Cho and Anton Yelchin all return, joined by Idris Elba, Sofia Boutella and Shohreh Aghdashloo.
Star Trek Beyond will enjoy its world premiere at San Diego’s Comic-Con, ahead of its wide release in theaters on July 22.
